Closing policy

The superintendent decides when students need to be dismissed from classes because of extreme heat, snow or ice storms, water shortages or other unusual circumstances. Dismissals will be announced by area radio and television stations, the Cabarrus County Schools Web site and telephone calls to all students' homes.

In case of snow or other severe weather, area radio and television stations will be notified. A 24-hour information line, 704-784-6197, is updated regularly during weather-related emergencies. Working parents should make arrangements for child care on days when schools must be dismissed early.

If school is closed or dismissed early because of weather conditions, after-school and before-school programs will not operate that day. This information also will be posted on the Web site at www.cabarrus.k12.nc.us and telephone calls will be made to parents using the Connect Ed Communications system. Channel 21 will be updated to provide the most current information regarding school closings.

A limited bus plan has been established and will be shared by the principals at all schools at the beginning of the school year.

Meal prices

Breakfast: $1.15 for elementary students; $1.30 for middle and high school students. Reduced: 30cents.

Lunch: $2.15 for elementary students; $2.25 for middle and high school students. Reduced: 40cents.

Adult Meals: A la carte.

Insurance: School time: $25 triple option, $15 double option, $9 single option. 24-hour coverage: $150 triple option, $75 double option, $45 single option.

Child care

General: The Cabarrus County Schools operate before- and after-school care for children through the Kids: Plus program. Selected sites will be open for teacher planning days and most holidays, as well as in the summer.

After-school care provides supervised activities, such as crafts, free play, homework time, organized games, relaxation and 4-H clubs. On regular school days, the after-school program operates from school dismissal until 6p.m. The daily schedule includes teacher-directed activities, free play, homework time and relaxation time, as well as a snack. Programs are planned and supervised by qualified caregivers.

Child care is not provided at any site on days when school is closed or dismissed early due to inclement weather. The program does not operate on legal holidays when administrative offices are closed.

All sites are licensed through the N.C. Department of Human Resources. That means financial assistance is available for families who qualify through the Cabarrus County Department of Social Services.

Hours: Before-school care begins each day at 6:20a.m. and lasts until students are dismissed to their classrooms. The after-school program operates from school dismissal until 6p.m. on regular school days.

Requirements: To enter the program, parents must complete an application and return it with the registration fee. Weekly payments are collected each Monday and Friday by the site specialist. Students are served on a weekly basis. To register or for information, call the Kids: Plus office at 704-786-5699.
