Jason Sabbides, a student at UNC Asheville, won first place in the 21st annual Open Art Competition in Valdese.
More than 300 visitors attend the showing at the Rock School, where Warren Dennis judged 69 paintings.
Other winners were Betty Henshaw of Leicester, second place; and Andrew Atkin of Granite Falls, third place.
Honorable mentions went to Patrick Leger, Jane Best and Sarah Britt, all of Morganton; Judy Rider of Hickory; Jackie Deaton of Valdese; and Martha Whitfield of Charlotte.
Lance Turner of Morganton won the People's Choice Award.
The art is on display at Rock School Arts, 400 Main St. W., Valdese, through Sept. 29.
The galleries are open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays and by appointment Saturday and Sunday.
