The sprinkler system activated overnight at a private school in southeast Charlotte, damaging at least six classrooms and causing considerable damage to the interior of the rooms.
The incident happened at the Jewish Day School, which is in Shalom Park, on Providence Road.
Fire officials say the sprinklers activated because pottery kilns were left operating in a classroom. The kilns caused the temperature to rise in the room, activating the sprinklers.
Reports from the scene indicate that between six and seven classrooms were affected.
School officials have not announced how the water damage will affect scheduled classes today.
